JUN. JUL 2018 I JUNE-JULY 2018 AT PAGE 1 We’re ready for take-off! A more than positive result for the Italian agri-food sector in 2017. This was revealed by the Ismea Agrosserva report for the last quarter of the year. The food industry was the main driving force behind the agri- food trend which, compared to 2016, benefited directly from the good performance of domestic and foreign demand and saw an increase of +1.8% in added value, +3% in industrial production and +1% of employees. Agri-food exports of food and beverages were no less important, closing the year at a record level of €41 billion. To complete the picture of the recovery, finally, is the food consumption of Italian families, which after 5 years of stalemate, recorded an increase of 3.2%: according to the latest data ISMEA Nielsen, in fact, Italian consumers in 2017 spent about 3% more for food and 4.6% more for beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). In short, our sector is one of the flagships of the country’s economy and we at CIC are well aware of this. During the annual Institutional Assembly, the more than positive numbers for the 2017 financial year made us understand that we are on the right track. We have consolidated what we sowed in previous years and now we are ready to look further... And we are already moving in this direction. The participation of CIC at Italian and foreign events/exhibitions with an international scope is testimony to this. We are ready for take-off, and when I say we, I am referring to all the members who have joined the Cooperative believing in the project. Ours is a project which has been ambitious from the beginning, but one in which we have strongly believed and for which we are reaping the benefits today. But these results should not make us think that we have achieved everything. We still have a long way to go and only if we continue to remain united with the same vision for the future can we hope to do even better. Let’s say that we have consolidated the foundations, now we must begin to build continuing to show passion and tenacity, just as we have done so far. I believe, let’s all believe together! Vincenzo Murgia AT PAGE 3 What women don’t say... but do A few days ago, I was struck by a piece of news which I read in a national newspaper: in the UK, a 15-year-old waitress published a message from her boss on social media: “Cover the blemishes or you’re fired”. Emily, a 15-year-old student, was astonished when the head of the cafeteria where she works sent her a written warning on her mobile phone. She was warned for alleged “marks” on her neck and back, which were nothing more than acne, a problem she had been fighting with for some time. Her boss also accused her of being drunk when she came to work one morning, even though - as Emily herself told the Daily Mail - she had spent the previous evening looking after her grandmother until dawn. Emily, had worked for about 10 hours in her new job when she received the shocking rebuke. And so the girl, choosing to remain silent, decided to resign. And it’s not hard to believe. Even in the new millennium, women are struggling to find their place in the world of work. There are still many prejudices to which they are subjected, which MAGAZINE Traduzione a cura di Christopher Farley
